Position Overview:
The National Tour of Phantom of the Opera, Box 5 Company LLC, is seeking applications for an Automation Operator.
Role and Responsibilities:
The Automation Technician reports to the Head Carpenter. This position sets up all overhead and deck automation in the show with assistance from their team of local carpenters. Once loaded in, they run a safety check of the entire system. During performances, the automation tech operates the console which controls all automation effects. The Automation Technician supervises four or more local carpentry crew members during load-in and load-out.
Essential Duties
- Load-In / Load-Out

- Reeve all trusses or other overhead automation, plug in winches, and trim trusses as necessary
- Reeve all deck tracks and tension winches
- Manage cable to maintain a safe workspace
- Run safety check out by operating all effects in show conditions
- Assist other departments by moving automation as needed
- Supervision

- Lead and direct four or more local carpenters to assist in the show’s load-in and load-out
- Show Call

- Operate the automation control console in a safe and consistent manner for performances, rehearsals, and maintenance operations
- Daily Operations

- Inspect and maintain electronic, hydraulic, and motorized equipment and systems
- Update maintenance and inspection records as directed
- Preventive maintenance and cleaning of automation equipment per manufacturer’s specifications
- Communication with head carpenter, vendors, and production managers
- Safety

- Maintain a safe working environment by conforming to all established safety policies and procedures
- Understand Employer’s safety handbook, specifically regarding Fall Arrest and Fall Prevention Protocols
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- Team player, able to work long hours in very close quarters, problem solving skills, proactive, goal oriented, excellent problem solving and communication skills.
- Previous touring experience is required.
- General knowledge of PRG, STS, or similar PLC, i/o based automations systems required.
- Must be comfortable working at height.
- Must be able to climb straight ladders and/or spiral stairs.
- At least two (2) years’ experience in the requested Department.
Salary:
Base Salary: $2,500/wk
Benefits:
Per IATSE “Full Pink” Agreement
Travel & Housing:
Per IATSE “Full Pink” Agreement. Daily Per Diem rates based on the Actors’ Equity Touring Agreement – Level 6.
